The YWCA movement

Across Australia, most regions are represented by YWCA Australia. YWCA Canberra and YWCA Hunter Region are Affiliates of YWCA Australia and can participate at both the national and international level as a YWCA.

YWCA Canberra is also proud to be part of the World YWCA network, which connects over 100 countries across the globe. The purpose of World YWCA is to develop the leadership and collective power of women and girls around the world to achieve justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and a sustainable environment for all people.

As one of the world’s largest women’s organisations, YWCAs have a global outreach of 25 million women and girls.

Within this international movement, YWCA Canberra seeks to play its part in working for a world where reconciliation, justice, peace, health, human dignity, freedom and care for the environment are promoted and sustained through women’s leadership.

Every four years, the World YWCA Council meets to make decisions on the World YWCA’s policy, constitution, strategic direction and budgets. YWCA Canberra endeavours to send representatives to this meeting to ensure we are working consistently with our global partners and to share our successes and learnings.

Following the success of its internship program, World YWCA also started the Young Women Leadership Cohort Programme in 2019. This program provides an opportunity for young women from the YWCA movement to experience the international community-building, work and reach of World YWCA.

To be notified of these opportunities when they arise, become a YWCA Canberra member today.
