YWCA Canberra Youth Programs offers short-term case work for young people aged 10 to 25 from the Tuggeranong area. The Youth team can help support young people in many areas of their lives and reach self-determined goals.

Through the case work program, we provide advocacy and support for young people to suit their individual needs and circumstances.

A-Z is a social support group for gender and sexuality diverse young people and allies between the ages of 12 and 25. The program offers an opportunity for young people to learn about and participate in relevant upcoming events, to hear from guest speakers and to hang out with new and existing friends.

The group meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 7pm during school terms at the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre. There are also options to join the meeting virtually.

If you want to join the meeting, email our Youth Engagement Team.

The LGBTQIA+ & Allies Prom is an opportunity for young people to experience a formal style event and express their identity in a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment. This event is strictly drug and alcohol-free.

This program is funded through grants from the ACT Government and kind donations from the ACT community.

At this event, we also celebrate and recognise the exceptional young people in our community through the LGBTQIA+ & Allies Prom Awards.

Due to COVID-19, last year’s Prom was converted to a picnic in the park. Read more about what happened at the event.

Y-Aspire is a free eight-week, young women’s leadership program for girls and non-binary students in Years 7 and 8. It focuses on helping young women build a strong connection to schooling through an integrated learning program.

Through a series of two-hour workshops, combining knowledge-based and interactive activities, the participants are provided with the opportunity to identify and build on existing skills, explore topics such as identity, resilience, body confidence, self-care, respectful relationships, and leadership, to achieve their potential at school and beyond.

Y-Aspire aims to:

  • build skills and confidence to assist young women in their journey through high school and beyond
  • support them to identify and achieve their goals
  • engage young women in activities that are designed to create awareness into who they are
  • encourage future aspirations
  • foster an environment that promotes participants to question the norms and expectations that may conflict with their aspirations.

For more information about Y-Aspire, please contact Lanyon Youth Centre on 02 6185 2090.

In 2014, Y-Aspire was the recipient of an ACT Mental Health Week Award, in the category ‘Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention – Organisation’.

You can read more about the program in blog posts from our former facilitator and on reflections from students who have done the program.

YWCA Canberra’s Clubhouse is a free, out of school learning space that provides over 400 young people, aged 10 to 18 in the Tuggeranong region with access to the latest technology, as well as mentoring and support to grow their skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and music. The program exists to deliver better socio-economic outcomes for the Tuggeranong community and better STEAM employment outcomes for women and young people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and culturally diverse backgrounds. With the essential support from our cross-sector partners, volunteers, Tuggeranong community, and our dedicated staff, our members have access to cutting-edge technology, industry mentors and a supportive environment that fosters their creativity and independent learning almost every week of the year.

This includes our new recording studios at both our Richardson location and the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre.

Founded in Boston in 1993, the Clubhouse Network now extends across the world, providing 25,000 youth per year access to resources, skills and experience to help them succeed in their careers, contribute to their communities and lead outstanding lives.

The YWCA Canberra Clubhouse is located in the Tuggeranong region, and is a space where young people can drop by to engage with mentors, embark on new projects, and learn in a safe, friendly and open environment.

What can Clubhouse members learn?

The Clubhouse learning approach is designed to empower young people from all backgrounds to become more capable, creative, and confident learners.

At the Clubhouse, members can explore areas such as coding, 3D printing, photography, videography, visual art, green screen effects, music, virtual reality, and more. The Clubhouse also offers a free school holiday program during each school holiday period.

Members can drive their own projects according to their interests and ideas, and the Clubhouse Coordinator provides support and assistance. Clubhouse mentors also engage with members by sharing their experience and knowledge.

The Clubhouse really shows that young people learn best when they can work on projects that they are passionate about and actively engage in designing, creating, and inventing—not just passively receiving information.

Application and membership

To ensure the Clubhouse is delivering a high-quality program that aligns with the Clubhouse Network Learning Model and Principles of Practice, prospective members must complete an application to become a member.

Membership to the Clubhouse is on a term-by-term basis with a limited number of places available. Applicants and current members will need to re-apply for each term. Applications will be assessed on their suitability for this program based on the Learning Model, interest in STEAMM, and prior engagement in the Clubhouse program.

Priority will be given to young people who live or attend school in the Tuggeranong region. Equitable access is important to us, and we will do our best to accommodate all eligible young people.

Applicants will be contacted in the last week of the school holidays with the outcome of their application. Successful applicants must complete a more comprehensive membership form to give additional information and consent. If we cannot offer a place, the young person will be added to a waiting list and contacted if a spot becomes available.

The application form can be accessed here.

This is an ACT Government funded program to service vulnerable young people in the community. As such, participants will be triaged based on a needs assessment which will be governed by best practice policy.

These winter school holidays we have a jam-packed program with heaps of excursions. With a focus on NAIDOC Week, we will be attending and hosting a sticker-making stall at the NAIDOC Week celebration in the Woden town square, as well as the Stories of Australian Art tour at the National Gallery of Australia. We’ll also be getting active at Corin Forest riding on the alpine slide, taking a tour of Canberra’s best skate parks, and ten pin bowling. We’ll also be doing linocut printmaking, relaxing at the cinema watching a movie, and ending the holidays with a big planning workshop to design YWCA Canberra’s annual LGBTQIA+ & Allies Prom!

Drop in activities will be run from the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre, 22 Sidney Nolan Street, Conder. For excursions, the bus will pick up and drop off at the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre. Excursions require a signed excursion permission form.
