Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre

Mura (pronounced Muh-ra) is a traditional Ngunnawal word meaning ‘pathway’.

The YWCA Canberra Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre (MLYCC) is a part of the local community and plays an important role in providing pathways for community members to engage in social, cultural, recreational and educational activities within the community. The MLYCC is funded through the ACT Government Community Services Directorate under the Community Development Program, which aims to build stronger communities. These services promote participation so that individuals and communities are connected, productive, supported and have a positive start. The MLYCC is a drug-free, alcohol-free and violence-free zone.

Programs and services operating from the MLYCC to provide support to people who live, work or play in the Tuggeranong region include:

The MLYCC also has spaces available for hire by community members and groups for regular or one-off events.

The Lanyon Food Hub provides emergency relief to families who are experiencing significant financial distress, with a focus on supporting people from the Tuggeranong region of the ACT. Eligible community members can access the Lanyon Food Hub in two ways: through a membership or emergency assistance access.

The Lanyon Food Hub is open on Thursday from 9am to 2pm. It includes of a pantry-style system with a mixture non-perishable, fresh produce, refrigerated and frozen items.

Lanyon Food Hub guidelines

Members:

  • may access the service once per fortnight
  • must adhere to the shelf limits of items
  • must bring their membership card and photo ID on each visit
  • must respect the staff and volunteers of the MLYCC Lanyon Food Hub
  • must understand that the MLYCC is drug, alcohol and smoke free

Members who do not adhere to these guidelines may be asked to leave the service.

The Lanyon Food Hub is funded through a Financial Wellbeing and Capability Grant from the Federal Government Department of Social Services.

The MLYCC has multiple rooms available to community members, organisations and businesses to hire, including:

  • Community hall: comfortably seats around 40 adults (more standing). Has an outside courtyard area and kitchen adjacent for hirers to use.
  • Café: complete with kitchen and seats around 15
  • Counselling room: Ideal for small meetings of two to four people.

The MLYCC has custodianship of the Snow Foundation Community Bus, a 12-seater Volkswagon bus. The Community Bus is available for hire by community groups, schools and organisations from Canberra and surrounds, with a priority and focus on Tuggeranong-based groups.

There is no fee to hire the Community Bus; however, a $500 deposit is required for all bookings. This is refundable when the Community Bus and keys are returned in the same conditions as per the Vehicle Inspection Report.

Terms and conditions of bus hire:

  • All Drivers must hold a minimum Light Rigid Class Licence due to the Community Bus being over 12 seats.
  • All Drivers must be over the age of 25.
  • All Drivers must provide their licence details.
  • Hirers must pay the fuel costs, tolls, fines and traffic infringements.
